ABSTRACT

This study investigated the demographic determinants of consumption expenditure among different households in different income groups in Bayelsa State. It examined the marginal propensity to consume and save for different income groups in the State. A structured questionnaire was administered to 561 respondents using multi-stage (cluster) sampling technique. Completed copies of the questionnaire were analyzed using the quantile regression technique. Results showed that; level of education, gender and the marital status of the head of the household significantly determine consumption expenditure of the households in the different income groups in the State. It is thus recommended amongst others that the Bayelsa state Ministry of information and Orientation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education should carry out increased sensitization campaigns to sensitize Bayelsans on the importance of attaining higher educational levels to increasing their chances of earning higher income.
