The performance of Small and Medium Scale
Enterprises providing primarily affordable, clean energy solutions is critical
to the success and survival of businesses and by extension the growth and
development of any developing economy. Against this backdrop, the aim of this
study is to examine the effect of entrepreneurship development on the
performance of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) of affordable energy
solutions in the South-South Nigeria. The dimensions of entrepreneurship
development (regressor variable) were training, mentoring and funding) while
those of performance (regress and variable) productivity and market size.
Technology served as the moderating variable of the relationship between
entrepreneurship development and performance of the affordable energy Solutions
SMEs. Through the instrumentality of descriptive survey research approach,
structured questionnaire was administered to respondents who are owner-managers
and managers of SMEs of affordable energy solutions in the South-South,
Nigeria. The target population (480 respondents) of the study was drawn from
the registered SMEs in the region. Following the use of the Krejcie and
Morgan’s (1970) Table for Determining Sample Size, a sample size of 214 was
estimated and adjudged a representative sample. Seven (7) hypotheses were
formulated. The Spearman Correlation Coefficient was used to test hypotheses
one to six while Pearson’s Correlation was used to test hypothesis seven. The
study employed the International Business Machine Statistical Package
(IBM-SPSS) version 28 as the requisite software. The findings of the study
indicated that all the dimensions of entrepreneurship development were positive
and statistically significant with the applicable performance-dimensions. The
study therefore, among others, recommends that Small and Medium Scale Enterprises(SMEs) providing
affordable energy solutions in the South South of Nigeria should strategically
embrace entrepreneurship development both in the short term and long term so as
to enhance their performance.
